Generic Drug: Salbutamol

Indication: Treatment and prevention of bronchospasm in patients with reversible airway obstructive disease.  Indicated in acute attacks of asthma. It is also indicated in prevention of exercise induced bronchospasm.

Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component in preparation.

Dosage & Administration: Available as inhalation aerosol.

Special Precautions:

• Inhaled salbutamol can give rise to paradoxical bronchospasm, which may be life threatening. In such cases switch to alternative therapy is recommended.
• Cautious use in case of thyrotoxicosis, diabetes, hypertension and myocardial insufficiency.
• Cautious use in case if patient is taking other beta-2 stimulant drug (sympathomimetic drug).
• Cautious use with diuretics, xanthenes, digitalis and beta blockers due to drug interactions.

Side effects/ Undesired effects/ Adverse drug reactions: Tremors, palpitation, restlessness, hypokalemia, ankle edema, angioedema, urticaria, hypotension and collapse.

Generic Drug: Salbutamol.

Indication: It is indicated for the relief of bronchospasm in asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema, and other conditions associated with airways obstruction. It is also indicated to prevent symptoms in circumstances recognised by the patient to precipitate an asthma attack (e.g. before exercise, unavoidable allergic exposure).

Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to salbutamol.

Dosage & Administration: Available as syrup and capsule for oral administration.

Adult: 2-4 mg thrice a day

Children: 1-2 mg three or four times a day or as directed by physician.

Special Precautions:

• Cautious use in case of thyrotoxicosis, diabetes, hypertension and myocardial insufficiency.

Generic Drug: Salbutamol + Beclomethasone. Salbutamol (beta-adrenergic stimulant) is a bronchodilator while Beclomethasone (synthetic corticosteroid) has strong anti-inflammatory properties.

Indication: The combination therapy is recommended for treatment of asthma where requirement of inhaled bronchodilator and corticosteroid therapy in disease management is established.

Contraindication: Allergy or hypersensitivity to any component in the preparation.

Dosage and Administration:

For adult: Two inhalations, three to four times daily.

For children: One or two inhalations, two to four times daily.

*Ventoride  inhaler can be used with the help of a device known as a spacer.

Special Precautions:

• It is indicated for routine management of asthma on long term basis. It is not to be use in acute attacks.
• Patients with cardiovascular risk need extra precaution while using it due to beta adrenergic effect of Salbutamol.
• Salbutamol can cause paradoxical brochospasm which should be treated instantly with some alternative drugs.
• Beclomethasone can cause systemic effects in high doses; these are Cushing’s syndrome, growth retardation in children, adrenal suppression, cataract and glaucoma.
• Patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis need special care while using it.

Side Effects/ Undesired effects/ Adverse drug reactions:

Salbutamol can cause following side effects: Mild tremor, headache, paradoxical bronchospasm, allergic reactions, hypokalemia, dizziness, tachycardia and muscle cramps. Beclomethasone dipropionate can cause following side effects: Oral candidiasis (thrush), hypersensitivity reactions, adrenal suppression, easy bruising of the skin, growth retardation in children, easy bruising of the skin, hoarseness and throat irritation.

Indication: Asthma, Emphysema & Chronic Bronchitis

Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to any of the component. It is also contraindicated to the patients with active peptic ulcer disease.

Dosage & Administration: Available as liquid and tablet for oral administration.

Special Precautions: Special precautions are necessary in case of hepatic impairment, cardiac abnormalities, hypertension, arrhythmias, active peptic disease, pregnancy, lactation, pulmonary oedema, hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, high fever, convulsive disorders, patients on antidepressants, neonates and infants.

Side effects/ Undesired effects/ Adverse drug reactions: Seizures, tremor, palpitation, hypokalemia, muscle cramps, headache, anxiety, irritability, anorexia, nausea, insomnia, rarely rash and angioedema. Arrhythmias with premature ventricular contractions may be serious adverse effect.

Indication: Productive cough associated with bronchitis, bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, emphysema and other broncho-spastic disorders with mucus plugging.

Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to any of the component in the preparation. Pre-existing cardiac tachyarrhythmias.

Dosage & Administration: Available as tablets and syrup for oral administration. To be used as directed by physician.

Special Precautions: Cautious use is recommended in patients with hepatic impairment, renal impairment, chronic lung disease, cardiac failure, hypertension, high fever, hyperthyroidism, arrhythmias, pulmonary edema, diabetes mellitus, convulsive disorders, history of peptic ulcers, lactation and pregnancy.

Side effects/ Undesired effects/ Adverse drug reactions: The common adverse events are tremor, headache, anorexia, muscle cramps, palpitations, nausea, irritability, insomnia, heartburn, gastritis, anxiety, nervousness and central nervous disturbances. Behavioral disturbances may occur in children.
