There is a famous tale of a duck and a dog. The duck was a very simple creature. One day a dog came to it. Frightened by dog she closed her eyes. With closed eyes dog became invisible and she consoled itself that dog is no longer there. Then dog catch hold it and ate it easily. Similarly if we close eyes from a trigger factor, it does not mean that the danger of trigger has gone. Rather it stays and inflicts irreversible damage in the airway. What should be done in such a scenario? Instead of neglecting triggers one should plan strategies to defeat them. 

What are trigger factors?
Substances or factors which cause narrowing of airways and therefore induce asthma are called trigger factors. Based on mechanism of induction of asthma trigger factors are divided in two categories, allergic and non-allergic. Allergic trigger factors induce attack by triggering allergic reaction in the body. How trigger factors induce asthmatic attack?

Contact with a trigger factor induces two attacks of asthma. The first attack starts a few minutes after contact with a trigger such as  dust mite, pollens, insects, pets, mold, drugs, food, exercise, stress, kitchen fumes, cold, pollution and chest infection. It is called early response. Both allergic and non allergic factors induce this attack. However allergic trigger contact induces a second attack of asthma that starts after 4 to 8 hours after the trigger contact. It is called late response. The second attack is more severe. Therefore, day time exposure to triggers leads to severe asthmatic attack during night time.

How to defeat; identity trigger factors?
For an asthmatic patient asthma is the top enemy. How do we deal with our enemies in real life? Usually we gather maximum information about our enemy. Weakness of enemy is exploited and strong points are tackled. By adopting proper strategies built on these features we can defeat an enemy. By using the same principles you can defeat asthma. Asthma trigger factors are your enemies and therefore the first step in the battle against asthma is to identify your enemies means trigger factors.
 
Whenever you have symptoms of asthma and allergy try to observe the potential trigger factors in the environment and activities done immediately before onset of the symptoms. If you fail to detect any factor then you should suspect  exposure of trigger factor 4-8 hours before onset of symptoms. These might be few suspect able trigger factors.

Avoid contact with trigger factors:  Is it essential ?
On a skin sore if you sprinkle a few granules of red chilly powder daily, how quickly will your wound heal? Even the best medicines will fail to heal the wound. An asthmatic patient has allergy wounds in nose and airways. When trigger factors such as pollen and dust come in contact with these wounds they would cause irritation like chilly powder. In such a situation, even the best medicine will fail to heal the airway inflammation, and hence asthma. Therefore, trigger contact must be checked to improve asthma.

Avoid trigger contact: Asthmatic style?
With the availability of inhaled drugs, acute attacks of asthma now a days can be controlled effectively. However, for sustained symptom free period and prevention, the trigger factor control is very important. Though it is very effective strategy in the management of asthma, yet it remains grossly under-utilized in India.
 
In western countries, people spend most of their time in the indoor activities where housing, business establishment and offices are pollution free or having air-conditioning everywhere. Therefore, it is easier to avoid the environment trigger factors. But the Indians spend most of their time in outdoor activities, which involves interactions with a series of environment related trigger factors. Controlling trigger factors is a challenging task in such a life style. However, it is possible. Adopt a modified methodology of living a trigger related life by which you can perform your work without interacting a trigger or an irritant. These modified methods of doing works involving a consideration about triggers are useful for everybody and essential for asthmatic patients. Therefore it is called Asthmatic Style of Working. This style can be applied as "life's code of conduct" for asthma patients. 
 
Majority of patients usually come in contact with trigger factors during routine work of daily life. Asthmatic lifestyle is a modified method of performing work in such a way as to check trigger contact. Example, while clearing wheat, contact with grain dust aggravates asthma. However, if you clean the grain by washing and drying, you will not be exposed to grain dust and therefore will not have asthma. This is the asthmatic style of clearing grains.
