      Asthmatic style

Sore throat
Viral infection causing sore throat and respiratory infections are important trigger factor aggravating asthma. In many patients, specially in children asthma starts after sore throat and respiratory infections. In majority of patients sore throat is caused by viral infection hence antibiotics does not help much.


Bacterial infection

A number of patients relate onset of sore throat to intake of cold, sour or oily edibles but its cause and effect relationship has not been proved conclusively in scientific studies. 

  • Increase the dose of regular therapy.
  • Start reliever medicine.
 

 

  • Antibiotics.
  • Instead of avoidance by all, only sensitive asthmatic patients should keep precaution.

 

 

 

     
Sleep
Eighty percent asthmatic patients have aggravation of symptoms during sleep.

 

  • Such patients should take higher doses of anti asthma drugs before sleep.
  • Many patients feels better in the night if they take a light dinner.
  • Early dinner is beneficial than a late dinner.
     
Sudden climatic change
  • Asthmatic patients should minimize out-door exposure specially during changing weather.
  • Should increase the dose of anti asthma drugs on such days.
  • In winter days extra woollen clothing should be worn. Specially neck should be protected.
  • In summer days avoid using cold water while perspiring.
      
Rainy days

  • Avoid rain wetting.
  • If want go out on a rainy day take umbrella or rain coat with you.
  • If still you got wet then change clothings immediately.
  • If change is not possible then at least wipe head to dry but you should not dry it under a fan.
  • Take a cup of hot tea after got wet in the rain.
           
Mosquito repellants
  • Repellants with strong smell can cause problems in asthma patients specially at the symptomatic stage. Therefore use a repellent with mild smell.
  • Mosquito-net is a better alternative.
       
Tobacco smoke

  • Tobacco smoke not only worsens asthma in the user but can induce asthma in children sitting near a smoking parent or a person. Children with a family history of asthma are at higher risk.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Do not sit near a person smoking.
  • If in a vehicle ask smoker not to smoke.
  • If still a person is smoking then cover your face and nose with a handkerchief.
       
Pets

An asthmatic patient should not keep indoor pets. If total avoidance is not possible then asthmatic style of keeping a pet involves,
  • Avoiding entry of pet in the bed room.
  • Giving a frequent bath to the pet.
          
Fireworks & crackers

  • Avoid fire works since these emits fumes and smoke which aggravate asthma.
  • Put a wet mask over nose and mouth before lighting crackers.
  • Use crackers which release less fumes.
  • While using crackers the children should not stand in the direction of wind otherwise smoke from the lighted cracker shall be inhaled by the patient, which may trigger on an attack of asthma.
       
Worship lighting agarbatti/hawan
  • Agarbatti should be avoided.
  • Exposure to "Hawan" smoke should be avoided.
  • If avoidance of Hawan is not possible one may do it in a room fitted with exhaust fan and the asthmatic patient should sit on the opposite side of the smoke.
           
Lady's Head Washing
  • More water is retained in the hairs of ladies after head wash. Hairs get dried by evaporation which leads to head cooling and it may aggravates asthma in sensitive persons.
  • Asthmatic style of hair drying is to use two thick towels. Wipe excess of water with one towel and wrap second towel firmly around head as to absorb excess of water.
  • Use a hair dryer.
       
Farming works
  • Grain works: Storage of agricultural products, Grains, Cotton and Kutti.
  • Should use a thick mask wet in the center during work.
  • Farm should be away from the house.
  • If not away, at least avoid sleeping in the storage room.
  • Grains should be stored in the metal container or plastic bags. Open storage or storage in jute bag will enhance growth of storage dust mite on the humid days.
  • Kutti or cattle feed should be stored in dry place, dampness will increase growth of mite and molds.
