Concept of asthma free house

Majority of us spend half of our time in the house. The environment of house is a very important factor affecting severity of asthma. If an asthmatic patient wants to build a house many simple precautions will improve his asthma remarkably. Therefore the asthmatic patient may adopt following tips to construct a friendly house:

Walls
  • Walls of the house should be water proof so as to avoid dampness during rainy season. Lime plaster falls after some years . Use cement plaster.
Humidity
  • Keep  humidity levels low in the house.
  • Plants should not be kept inside the house.
  • Bathroom and kitchen are main source of humidity in the house hence these should be provided with exhaust fan to remove water vapours.
  • Avoid over humidification of house: Coolers are main source of humidity in hot summers. If coolers is essential then use one which is placed outside instead of inside the room.
  • Air conditioners can prevent high heat and humidity hence useful.  
Pets
  • Should not be allowed to enter in the bed room and preferably not  inside the house.
Carpet
  • Avoid carpet, rug or mats on the floor. Use smooth stone floor.
Curtains and excess fabric
  • Avoid thick curtains. Upholstery can store a lot of dust mite therefore one should not keep excess of fabric.
  • Avoid venetion blinds.
Furniture
  • Avoid furniture with carving and grooves which collects dust.
  • Avoid leather or cloth furniture . Use wooden and plastic furniture.
  • Avoid thick cotton covers of sofa. Use thin polyester cloth cover.
Jute bags and Mat
  • Avoid jute or paper bags . Use plastic bag or steel container.
  • Avoid jute foot-mats. Use rubber foot-mats.
Garbage
  • Avoid excess collection of newspaper and books . Use a computer floppy.
  • Dispose extra things in the house quickly.
Fumes and Perfumes
  • Avoid household chemicals with strong odours such as hair spray, perfumes, glues and paints.
  • Cleaning products with strong odour should not be used.
Cots
  • Avoid Niwar or Jute cots. Use wooden base cot.
Pillows and Mattresses
  • Avoid cotton pillows and mattresses . Use foam pillows and mattresses in dry places. However, molds grow over foam and hence it should not be used in places with high level of humidity.
  • Should ideally be enclosed in the plastic case but these make creecky sound during sleep hence they are not very comfortable. For cotton pillow and mattresses, please ensure that stitching is good and intact.
  • Avoid open almirhas, keep doors of closets closed to minimize dust.
  • Clean drawers, and closets with wet cloth.
Toys
  • Removing dust catching toys and bring plastic, inflatable vinyl toys or metal toys.
Decorations
  • Use easily cleanable decorations such framed pictures instead of wall hanging, cotton rugs and dried flower arrangements.
  • Keep home smoke free.
  • Avoid smoking or use an ioniser or exhaust fan in the room.
  • Avoid Agarbatti or use an exhaust fan in that room.
  • Avoid Hawan or use exhaust system in the area.
  • Avoid Mosquito repellant or use one with least pungent fumes or a mosquito net.
Feathers and dust
  • The house dust mite is a microscopic organism to which causes allergy in 90% of the patients of allergic asthma. It survives on animals and human shedding of skin, feather, and the dander from furry animals. Cattle and horse hair found in blankets, foot pads, upholstered furniture also provide food to mite. Therefore one should avoid or minimize these things in the house.
Clothing
  • Keep clothing in a closet with door shut.
  • Clothing should not have fur, or dust catching.
House
  • Location: It should be located away from a main road, factory, or market.
  • Design: Should be designed in such a way as to avoid dampness and devoid of dark ill ventilated areas in the house.
  • Ventilation: Doors and windows should be airtight so as to make house compact and airtight as to check pollen entry on the days of pollination season. There should be enough open able windows as to allow fresh air and light when desired. All doors or windows should be provided with wire mesh barrier or additional wire mesh door. It will check the entry of insects such as mosquitoes, flies and lizard, snot to enter house.
Playing in dark and damp places in the house
  • If you designing a new house, try to minimize dark ill ventilated space.
  • If your house has such places, please try to restrict the entry of an asthmatic child to such places.
