Generic Drug: Ketotifen (Mast Cell Stabilizer).

Indication: Prophylaxis of bronchial asthma to minimize the frequency and severity of asthma attacks. It is also useful in other allergic conditions including rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis and urticaria.

Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to ketotifen; diabetics on oral hypoglycemic drugs and children below 2 years.

Dosage & Administration: Available as tablets.

Adults: 0.5 to 1 mg at bed time – could be increased to 2-4mg in divided doses if required.

Children (above 2 years): 1mg once or twice a day.

Special Precautions:

  • Not indicated to control acute attacks.
  • To be used cautiously in diabetic patients.
  • Avoid driving and machinery operations.
  • To be taken with meal.

Side effects/ Undesired effects/ Adverse drug reactions: Sedation, dry mouth, dizziness, nausea and weight gain.
