What causes asthma?

Asthma symptoms may be caused or triggered off by one or more of several factors such as:

  • irritants (e.g. gases, fumes, smoke)
  • viral infections, such as cold
  • exposure to an allergen (if the person is allergic)
  • moderate exercise
  • change of weather
  • psychological factors, such as mental tension and anxiety
  • painkiller drugs: some patients may get these symptoms on consuming certain drugs, such as ibuprofen and aspirin

However, a causing or trigger factor may not be obvious in many cases.
