Generic Drug: Salbutamol.
Indication: Treatment and prevention of bronchospasm in patients with reversible airway obstructive disease. Indicated in acute attacks of asthma. It is also indicated in prevention of exercise induced bronchospasm.
Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component in preparation.
Dosage & Administration: Available as inhalation aerosol (asthalin inhaler) and dry powder for inhalation (asthalin rotacaps). Zerostat VT Spacer device is useful for Asthalin Inhaler for patients who are unable to synchronize breath inspiration with aerosol actuation. For younger children BabyMask device may be used. Asthalin Rotacaps are inhaled through Rotahaler/ Revolizer.
- Inhaled salbutamol can give rise to paradoxical bronchospasm, which may be life threatening. In such cases switch to alternative therapy is recommended.
- Cautious use in case of thyrotoxicosis, diabetes, hypertension and myocardial insufficiency.
- Cautious use in case if patient is taking other beta-2 stimulant drug (sympathomimetic drug).
- Cautious use with diuretics, xanthenes, digitalis and beta blockers due to drug interactions.
Side effects/ Undesired effects/ Adverse drug reactions: Tremors, palpitation, restlessness, hypokalemia, ankle edema, angioedema, urticaria, hypotension and collapse.
